In the field of food safety, the Listeria genus, is always under close surveillance and regularly makes headline news. Outbreaks in the US in previous months have lead to several highly publicized recalls, resulting in new USDA regulations for heightened testing of Listeria, especially in meat plants across the US.

To help food companies ensure the safety and quality of product and to avoid costly recalls, bioMérieux^® INDUSTRY, the worldwide leader in automated solutions for rapid pathogen detection, has developed a high-performance, Next Day™ Solution for the screening and detection of Listeria species, based on its world-recognized rapid VIDAS technology.

The VIDAS Listeria Species Xpress Solution provides Next Day test results for Listeria species using the standardized, automated ELFA technology provided by the VIDAS system. Samples started by noon will yield test results the Next Day, providing laboratories with critical information for action a full day earlier than current methods.

The VIDAS LSX Solution combines the use of an optimized media (Listeria Xpress broth) for improved Listeria enrichment and the VIDAS LSX assay, which utilizes bioMérieux’s know-how in immunoassay test development. The LX broth functions to reduce the lag time and boost organism recovery. The LSX assay incorporates a combination of polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies for a high level of sensitivity and specificity.

Evaluation by bioMérieux of the LSX solution with 28 non-Listeria strains did not reveal any cross-reactivity. A total of 289 samples were tested simultaneously using the VIDAS LSX Solution and the ISO 11290-1 method. The results are the following (number of positive results):
